Venables was called to the Bar in 1836, and was in legal practice for over forty years, pursuing a parallel career in journalism. For more than thirty years, he made regular weekly contributions to the Saturday Review. He also, for twenty-five years from 1857, compiled a summary of the year's events that was published in The Times on the last day of the year.
