On the death of his father when he was eleven Wyndham succeeded to vast ancestral property including Petworth House in Sussex, and a great art collection. In his youth Egremont's reputation was as a man of fashion and as a womaniser. In 1794, he sold his London house and moved the ancestral art collection to Petworth.
