MacBeth graduated from New College, Oxford in 1955 after publishing his first collection of poetry A Form of Words (1954). From 1955 to 1976 he worked for the BBC as a radio producer on poetry programmes and became associated with The Group, a company of poets including Ted Hughes and Alan Brownjohn whose aim it was to modernize verse.
