George Howard was a patron of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, an amateur artist in his own right, and a long-serving Trustee of the National Gallery. He was educated at Eton and Cambridge, but wished only to become an artist. Howard formed friendships with Watts, Leighton and Burne-Jones, and began his artistic training at Leigh's private art school.
