Grossmith played the chief comic roles in many Gilbert and Sullivan operas including Major-General Stanley in The Pirates of Penzance, Reginald Bunthorne in Patience and Ko-Ko, the 'Lord High Executioner', in The Mikado. Although he lacked a true operatic voice, his intonation and diction were excellent and most of Gilbert's tongue-twisting patter songs were composed for him.
