Cumberland was a courtier, gambler and prodigious privateer who became a founding member of the East India Company. Queen Elizabeth's 'rogue', he was a loyal courtier but did not hold political or military office. In 1590 Cumberland succeeded Sir Henry Lee as the queen's champion at court tournaments.
