George Augustus Sala NPG 3507

© National Portrait Gallery, London

by Harry Furniss

Sala was a popular subject for caricaturists but he was also quick to anger. In 1890, he sued Harry Furniss for libel for £500 in retaliation to an anecdote that claimed Sala had failed the entrance exam for the Royal Academy Schools by drawing a foot with six toes. The trial was relished by the press, generating an abundance of bad puns such as 'out of the Furniss into the fire'. Much to his embarrassment, Sala was awarded just £5 in damages.
