Oxford educated actor and singer, Hallam scored an immediate hit when he created the character of a typical pre-war 'nut' and sang Gilbert The Filbert in the revue The Passing Show in 1914. The following year he became a Balloon Observer with the Kite Balloon Section of the Royal Flying Corps.
