Produced in the year before the composer’s death, John Singer Sargent's portrait conveys Kelly's vitality in the depiction of his sturdy neck and chiselled, determined features. A prolific and celebrated painter and muralist, renowned for his portraits of Edwardian society, Sargent travelled to the Western Front as an official war artist in 1918.
