Statesman, poet and founding Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery. As a politician Ellesmere was an early advocate of free trade and served in a number of government positions. He was a supporter of the project for London University and combined his public life with a keen interest in literature and history, translating and editing numerous works. In 1856 he presented the first portrait to enter the collection of the newly founded National Portrait Gallery, the 'Chandos' portrait of Shakespeare.
