Diarist and novelist; the daughter of Dr Charles Burney. Her first novel, Evelina, or the history of a young lady's entrance into the world, 1778, astonished her friends and became a bestseller. In 1793 she married General D'Arblay, a French refugee. Her well-known Diary and Letters, documenting her friendships with Hester Thrale and Dr Johnson, and her life at the court of George III was first published in the 1840s, providing a rich resource for biographers ever since.
