American-born actress and singer, Frances Victoria Schenck began her career in New York nightclubs. The Australian impresario Beaumont Alexander brought her to London and changed her name to Frances Day. She first found success in 1932 in the West End musical Out of the Bottle, and a year later starred in Alexander Korda's The Girl (1933). Later stage successes also included Jill Darling! (1934) opposite ballet dancer and choreographer Frederick Ashton, and the role as May Daly in Cole Porter's musical Du Barry... more
