Commander of British forces in the Crimean War; entered army aged sixteen and lost right arm at Waterloo; appointed to command British troops against Russia in the Crimea in 1854. He secured victory at the Alma but his lack of experience as a commander in the field was held to blame for later calamities; died of cholera, 28 June 1855, 'the victim of England's unreadiness for war'.
