Sharp joined the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) after hearing a speech given by actress Elizabeth Robins in 1906. A Militant suffragette, she was imprisoned in Holloway several times for protesting. The writer was able to draw upon her journalism experience to inform and influence a largely male readership with articles and short stories on women's suffrage in the Manchester Guardian as well as editing women's suffrage journal Votes for Women.
