Historian. Born in Alexandria and educated in Vienna, Berlin, London and Cambridge, Hobsbawm taught until retirement at Birkbeck College, University of London, and from 1982 was Emeritus Professor of Economic and Social History, London University, and taught at the New School for Social Research, New York.
