Donkin was instrumental in founding the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1822. His first major venture was the development of the Fourdrinier papermaking machine. Although the original idea was not his, the development work on the machine was due to him, and the merit of his work was recognised with a gold medal at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
