Pethick-Lawrence and her husband Frederick Pethick-Lawrence, were ardent socialists and supporters of the womens' suffrage movement. As 1900 approached, she co- founded the Espérance Club, providing holiday accommodation and a dressmaking co-operative for women in the textile industry. In 1906, she became treasurer of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), enduring force feeding while imprisoned in Holloway. Pethick-Lawrence's resistance to the militant approaches of the WSPU led to disagreements and Christabel Pankhurst ousted the Pethick-Lawrences from the organisation. Despite this, the couple... more
