Singer and songwriter Janis was a child star of the American vaudeville circuit, before making her London debut in The Passing Show at the Palace Theatre in 1914. Her patriotic act served as a recruiting tool in the United States, and included the song Over There. After America entered the war, she toured French camps and hospitals to entertain troops, earning the accolade 'Sweetheart of the American Expeditionary Force'.
