Fearnley-Whittingstall, playing as Eileen Bennett, was a tennis champion who won six Grand Slam doubles titles between 1927 and 1931, when Time magazine described her as the 'prettiest and best dressed of women tennis players'. She reached the singles finals of the 1928 French Championships and the 1931 US Championships, losing both times to Helen Wills Moody. She defeated Wills Moody and partner Frank Hunter in 1929 in the mixed-doubles final of the French Championships, playing with Henri Cochet.
