Prior to the war, Edith was an active member of the Suffragette movement and served on a number of women's associations. In 1914 she joined the Women's Volunteer Reserve (WVR) as a colonel-in-chief. Edith took special interest in the agricultural work undertaken by the WVR and in July 1915 formed the Women's Legion which became the largest voluntary organisation during the war, having tens of thousands of volunteers working in all spheres from agriculture to baking.She also helped to organise and sustain the Officers'... more
