Storey first found success with his novel This Sporting Life (1960), and the 1963 film adaptation directed by Lindsay Anderson began a long professional association. Storey's first play The Restoration of Arnold Middleton was staged at the Royal Court Theatre in 1966, followed by In Celebration (1969), The Contractor (1969) and Home (1970).
