After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Uvarov was rescued from a Russian refugee camp, suffering from malaria and malnutrition. She was rescued by the Red Cross, who had been instructed by her uncle, the entomologist Boris Uvarov to find his family and bring them to London. Influenced by her uncle, she attended the Royal Veterinary College in London and in 1944 set up her own practice in Surrey.
