In 1759, Phipps went to sea with his uncle, Captain the Hon. Augustus Hervey and by 1765 had been made captain of the Terpsichore. He sailed to Newfoundland and Labrador with botanist Joseph Banks. In 1773, Phipps embarked on a voyage towards the North Pole. He had two ships, the Racehorse and the Carcass. One of the crew aboard Carcass was the young Nelson.
