Politician and suffragette who campaigned and fought for Irish independence. Countess Markievicz and her sister Eva Gore-Booth had a privileged but socialist upbringing in County Sligo. While studying at the Slade School of Art in 1892, she joined the National Union of Women's Suffrage. Moving to Dublin in 1903 encouraged her interest in nationalist politics and membership to the Irish Citizen Army.
