Born in West Hartlepool, Cleveland, Mackenzie was educated at St Paul's School and Magdalen College, Oxford. His first novel was published in 1911, followed by Carnival (1912) and his semi-autobiographical Sinister Street (1913-14) whose hero is 'handicapped by a public school and university education.' His directorship of the Aegean intelligence service in Syra (Siros) during the First World War is recounted in Extremes Meet (1928).
