Williams worked for the Oxford University Press in London from 1908, and moved with them to Oxford in 1939. Already acquainted with C.S. Lewis, Williams became an intimate of the Inklings. Lewis described him as being 'of humble origin (there are still traces of Cockney in his voice), ugly as a chimpanzee but so radiant (he emanates more love than any man I have ever known) that as soon as he begins talking he is transfigured and looks like an angel.'
