Joined the Army in 1858, and served in India but resigned his commission in 1861. He was closely involved with the sporty set of Edward, Prince of Wales and was well known as a society dandy. Indeed, he is thought to be the 'Champagne Charlie' of the popular song. He was fond of horse racing, and lost a great deal of money on the horses.
