by Sir Leslie Ward
Charles Old Goodford became an assistant master of his old school, Eton, in 1835. He soon succeeded his former tutor, John Wilder, in charge of a large schoolhouse. In 1853 he succeeded Edward Craven Hawtrey as headmaster. On the death of Dr. Hawtrey, Lord Palmerston, much against Goodford's own wishes, appointed Goodford provost of Eton, a position which he held from 1862 to his death.
