Initially a rector in the family living in the Parish of Averham with Kelham, in Nottinghamshire, promotions came rapidly to Manners-Sutton. In 1791 he became Dean of Peterborough, the following year was consecrated Bishop of Norwich and two years later was appointed Dean of Windsor.
