This portrait is a reduced version of Woolner's medallion of Latrobe executed in Melbourne (where there is an example in the Victoria State Library). When the sculptor went to Australia in search of gold in 1852, one of his travelling companions, Latrobe's nephew, helped him obtain portrait commissions on his arrival. Woolner returned to England in 1854 and Latrobe in 1857. This medallion was purchased from the sculptor's daughter, Amy Woolner, in 1912.
