Actor; appeared with Old Vic company before founding Mermaid Theatre (1951) whose productions were first seen in his garden, then on a reconstructed Elizabethan stage at the Royal Exchange and from 1959 in the newly built Mermaid Theatre at Puddle Dock, Blackfriars.
