Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield NPG x666

© National Portrait Gallery, London

by (Cornelius) Jabez Hughes

Although he sought to produce a 'characteristic likeness' which was also as 'pleasing as possible', Hughes could not disguise the fatigue of an exhausted Disraeli in these prints. In his familiar frockcoat , Disraeli was allowed to sit down in Queen Victoria's presence due to his suffering from gout. Disraeli's trademark black curl is prominent in the prints and he epitomised his description as 'one of those stone figures of ancient Egypt that embody the idea of motionless quiescence for ever'.
