Japanese- born Ijuin Goro served as a cadet in the Taiwan Expedition, the Ganghwa Island Incident off Korea and the Satsuma Rebellion. Following this, in 1877 he was sent to study in England. He attended the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. After his promotion from sub-lieutenant to lieutenant he returned back to Japan in 1886 to join the Imperial Japanese Navy Genereal Staff.
