Maharani Bamba Duleep Singh (née Müller) was the illegitimate daughter of a German banker and his Abyssinian mistress who was a Coptic Christian slave. She was brought up and educated by Christian missionaries in Cairo, later becoming a teacher. Whilst teaching at the missionary and despite speaking only Arabic, she was encouraged to enter into a correspondence courtship with Maharaja Duleep Singh after he contacted the missionary in the hope of finding a Christian wife of eastern descent.
