Onslow entered parliament in 1720 and remained an MP for over forty years. In 1728 he was elected speaker. He was the third member of his family to hold this office, to which he was unanimously re-elected four times. His speakership spanned the entire reign of George II, and by the end of the twentieth century he still held the record for length of service in the office.
