Worked for an iron foundry from the age of twelve. In 1892 Henderson was elected to a post for the Iron Founders Union. He became an MP for the Labour Representation Committee (later the Labour Party) in 1900. In 1915 he was the first member of the Labour Party to become a member of the Cabinet, as President of the Board of Education. He was appointed to the Cabinet as Foreign Secretary in 1929.
