An Australian-born Scot, Clark Kerr entered the Foreign Service in 1906. He served as Ambassador to China during the Japanese occupation of the late 1930s, and was transferred to Moscow in 1942 where he forged a remarkable relationship with Stalin. After the war Clark was appointed Ambassador to the United States; he was created Baron Inverchapel in 1946.
