Born in Calcutta, Fenner Brockway was the son of a missionary. He became a journalist and by 1912 was editor of the Independent Labour Party (ILP) newspaper, the Labour Leader. He became a militant pacifist and a prominent opponent of conscription. During World War I he was sentenced to jail four times, enduring hard labour and solitary confinement.
