Radio astronomer. Hewish studied at the University of Cambridge. While directing a research project at the Mullard Radio Observatory in 1967, Hewish recognised that the radio signals detected by his research student Jocelyn Bell, were energy emissions from a new classification of star. Hewish became Professor of Radio Astronomy at Cambridge in 1971, and professor emeritus in 1989.
