Hill trained at St Martin's School of Art and Central School of Art and Design (1947-1951). His early works were primarily Dadaist and Surrealist in style, but in the 1950s he was influenced by European artists Francis Picabia, Frantisek Kupka and Georges Vantongerloo, and in 1956 he stopped painting in order to focus on sculptural reliefs.
