Bogle had worked as a servant for the Tichborne family, so he knew Roger well. This made him an important witness in the Tichborne criminal trial. He visited and recognised the Claimant as Roger in Australia. Bogle was accused of providing the Claimant with vital information about the family, a charge not helped years later when the Claimant admitted Bogle had been a key source in his confessions published in 1895, which he later retracted.
