by Adolphe Paul Auguste Beau
Initially a 'wandering minstrel', by 1834 he was acting at the Lyceum in London. Wigan had a long and successful stage career spanning over forty years. Wigan was deemed an admirable actor with humour and pathos equally at his command. He was a French scholar, and his greatest successes were in roles where he was required to speak French or broken English. Among purely English characters, his John Mildmay in Tom Taylor's Still Waters Run Deep is thought of as his masterpiece.
