by Julia Margaret Cameron
Cameron probably first met Tennyson in 1850, the year he was appointed Poet Laureate, and he was to become one of her most famous sitters. His home from 1853, Farringford House at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight, made him a close neighbour of the Camerons and so frequent a visitor that he had a private gate opened up through the wall of his estate into their garden. Aside from portraits of Tennyson himself, Cameron took photographs to illustrate a number of his works.
