Organic chemist. Alexander Todd's research into the structures of nucleic acids was an essential preliminary to the work carried out by James Watson and Francis Crick on the double-helix structure of DNA. The importance of Todd's work was acknowledged in 1957 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. On his retirement, Todd declined the offer of becoming vice-chancellor of Cambridge University but he accepted the position of the first chancellor of the University of Strathclyde.
