Cuban photographer, Korda was born Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez in Havana. The son of a railway worker he took various jobs before he became a photographer's assistant. He earned money by photographing special events, running between the studio and venue to develop and then sell his prints as souvenirs. He formed Korda Studios in partnership with Luis Pierce in 1956.
