Egyptian nationalist and officer of the Egyptian Army, Ahmed Arabi was the first political officer and leader from the fellahin/i> peasant class. Born in a small village north of Cairo, Arabi was the son of a wealthy village leader, affording him a good education. He joined the army and climbed up the ranks swiftly.
