Little is known of van der Doort's early life. He was probably the son of Peter van Doort, an engraver of Dutch descent who was working in Hamburg in the early years of the seventeenth century. In around 1610 he arrived in England and joined the service of Henry, Prince of Wales, as Keeper of his new cabinet room.
