After graduating from the RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts), Shaw joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in 1949. He left the company in 1951 and had small roles in television dramas. Shaw's career was revived with the part of Dan Tempest in the TV drama The Buccaneers which ran for thirty-nine episodes from 1956.
