Armenian-born Canadian photographer. Initially apprenticed to the Boston photographer John H. Garo, Karsh opened a studio in Ottawa in 1932. Within three years he was commissioned to take the official photographs of the Canadian Government and in 1942, his photograph of Winston Churchill was published on the cover of Life magazine, with other important commissions for Life magazine following.
