In the year this photograph was taken Hunt was best man at the wedding of the Pre-Raphaelite sculptor Thomas Woolner and Alice Waugh, the sister of his future wife, Fanny. This image complements a description of Hunt in the 1860s as 'a very genial young looking creature, with a large square, yellow beard, clear blue laughing eyes…and the whole expression sunny and full of simple boyish happiness…there is nothing in his look or bearing…to suggest the High Priest of Pre-Raphaelitism.'
